...from the minute I set foot into Thailand. :)
After a short flight to Detroit, we flew 13 hours from
Detroit to Seoul, Korea, where we were supposed to have an one-hour
layover. Our Seoul flight landed late,
and an airline representative was waiting to escort us and about 8 other people
to the flight from Seoul to Bangkok. After
informing us that the airline wouldn’t wait to leave even though she had called
the gate to say we were coming, she guided us on an all out SPRINT through the
airport (she wearing high heels!), through 2 different elevators, through a
security checkpoint and to the gate. I was in the middle of the group, and as
we were trying to turn a corner we got separated by some kind of procession of
people in full costume and makeup that I had to dodge around. And immediately after I got around them, one
of the handicap trollies turned right in front of me and I had to dodge around
that, too, and then soon after I almost took out a cute little Koren child that
toddled out in front of me. It was like
playing Temple Run live!
A lovely procession promoting Korean culture at the Seoul airport. This is NOT my picture as I was busy dodging around them, but this is definitely what blocked my way. |
We did make it to the gate on time, and I am pretty sure our
entire group got on the plane. Gavin and
I were drenched in sweat – we were soaked all the way through our shirts, and
this AFTER around 20 hours already marinating in these clothes through our
first two flights... I’m glad we were by
ourselves in our row so nobody had to smell us! :)
When we arrived in Bangkok, as we were waiting at
immigration I suddenly noticed a sign that said “Wearing, carrying, selling, or buying
images of the Buddha is illegal in Thailand.”
Guess what I happened to be wearing…
Yep, that's half of Buddha's face on the side of my shirt! Just my luck to walk into Thailand wearing an illegal shirt! :D |
Luckily Buddha was kind of subtly worked into the overall design
of the shirt, and I just held my jacket over it until we got to our hotel. This is definitely the first time I have been
breaking the law the instant we arrived in a country. :D
We stayed one night at the Thong Ta Resort and Spa, a hotel
close to the airport. Tomorrow morning
we will fly to Phuket to begin our vacation!
